Chapter 23

Darian

A couple of hours later, after showers and a nap, the Watcher and Sentinel once again sat in Sara’s dining room. The short respite restored most of Sara’s energy, and the hearty meal she dug into would take care of the rest. Her long, dark hair curled around her face despite the tight braid she tried to confine it with. Darian’s lips tugged into a small smile as she pulled a curl away from her mouth before taking another bite.

But Darian barely touched the food on his plate. He wasn’t hungry. Sara had done all the work at the Citadel. He merely played escort. He tried not to let it bother him, but he struggled to let her take the role of protector. It wasn’t in his nature to stand aside, but he couldn’t afford to suppress her strength. They would certainly need it against this demon Master.

As she finished the last of her roasted pork and vegetables, she broke the silence. “Are we going back to make sure it’s done?”

He knew she meant the Citadel’s destruction.

“I think we need to…for my own peace of mind more than anything else,” he replied.

“I understand. And after that?”

“Depending on what we find, I’d like to see where that last portal leads to.” He pushed a carrot from one side of his plate to the other. “But I suspect it no longer works. The pulse of magic radiating from the tower is probably a result of the tower releasing all the undead. Which means there’s nothing left to power the portals.”

“You should’ve told Margo you weren’t hungry,” Sara said, abruptly changing the subject.

He pulled his focus from the rolling carrot to find her smiling at him. They’d already discussed the possibilities. He was repeating it for his own benefit, and she let him.

“Hopefully she’ll be able to save it for later,” he said, setting his fork down and pushing the plate away.

“I’m sure it won’t go to waste.”

The front door slamming against its hinges drew their attention. Moments later, Jared and Slim stood in the entry to the dining room. Dust and sweat covered Jared’s clothing, which was expected since he spent all day in one of the fields. However, the fresh blood staining Slim’s already dirty shirt and clumps of mud clinging to his worn jeans and boots were not expected. The smell of gun powder hung in the air around him, and Darian knew it wouldn’t be good news.

“What happened?” Sara asked, pushing her own plate away.

“Them damn demons destroyed my place,” Slim stated, fists clenched at his sides.

Silence filled the room as Slim shifted his weight from one foot to the other. Sara glanced at Darian, then back at Slim and Jared.

“You and your men are welcome to stay here. We’ll find temporary shelter for you,” she said. “Did the demons follow?”

Of course, people would be Sara’s first concern, not the fight itself or how many demons. It was the main difference between the two of them, not that Darian minded.
